| Heroes Vs Villains: Battle for
Supremacy, was a special game type created for Unreal
Tournament 2004. The game had three assault levels;
The city hall, the villain's lair, and the power core. Depending
on who won a map, dictated what the next map would be. If
the heroes won the city hall map, they would push the villains
back to their lair. If the Villains won city hall, they
would push the heroes back to the power core. If the
villains won at the power core, or if the heroes won at the
villain's lair, then they would win the game. My task was to
create the power core level. I had to create a number of
custom static meshes, including destroyable blast doors, and a
three-damage-stage power core. I also drew up code for the
programmers to create a custom assault objective that didn't
break its own texture if it included an alpha layer.
The level had three goals. The first was for the
villains to fight past the heroes to blow open a set of blast
doors. The second goal was to have the villains reach two
different stations in the control room in order to open the
doors that led to the core. And finally, the villains had
to destroy the core itself. I had to create a gamespace
that let each superpower (Super Speed, Super Jump and
Invisibility) shine and give the player that had it a different
and useful advantage inherent in the level itself.
For those interested in playing my level, a standard assault
map version was created so that one wouldn't have to install the
custom game type on multiple computers (the game didn't include
bots). While it isn't as good as the original version that
was in the game, it gives a player a good feel for the level
itself.
