Omicron I is a standalone level for Doom 3 that I worked on as an individual project. The original design for the level was large in scope and size. Through consultation with my professor, industry visitors, and other students, I rescoped the design to make it achieveable within a limited amount of time while still maintaining as much of the original vision as possible. I believe that I succeeded in this task, and Omicron I remains a level that I am proud of.
It takes place in an aging Mars facility that contains cargo processing and power control systems for the larger Omicron complex. Demons have overrun the facility and the player's goal is to make it out of the exit and proceed to Omicron II.
Two major achievements stand out in this level. First, my design called for a malfunctioning forklift that is blocking the exit from the level. One of the requirements of this project was that we were not allowed to create custom models or textures. Because there is no preexisting forklift model in the game, I chose to create it from BSP and Patch. The forklift turned out so well that many people who saw it assumed it was a model at first (See screenshot 4).
Second, I created a complex scripted moving machine to serve as both an atmospheric element and a physical obstacle down in the mechanical bowels of the maintenance shafts below the facility. The machine has three separate moving parts, and includes elements such as a timed beam emitter, lights that fade in and out, and triggered sounds. |
