Kompressor was a Racing mod for Half Life 2 developed at The Guildhall by a team of students known collectively as Gearhead Games. On the first day of our last two terms at The Guildhall, we were informed by our 'publisher' (the school) that we were to use the Half Life 2 technology to make a total conversion proof of concept vehicle based game. One team would make a vehicle based combat game and the other would be making a arcade-like straight racing game similar to Need For Speed, or San Francisco Rush.
The Kompressor team was the straight racing team. Over a course of 4.5 months, our 11 man team streched the Half-Life 2 technology to the limits and managed to create a multiplayer racing game with support for up to 4 players. Struggling through performance problems, maximum world entity limits, vehicle physics issues, maximum vertex count issues, and network issues, we managed to make a convincing 'realistic' demo level which is both fun to play and has rock solid stability.
